I looked behind myself then at her again.
Yup, she was looking at me. She even gave me a small smile that made heat collect beneath my skin even though the icy Connecticut air was biting through my jacket.
She moved closer, waving shyly. I nodded at her and took a few long strides forward. My heart thundered against my chest once we were standing face to face. I didn’t believe in love at first sight but the way she looked at me made something wedged deep inside of me pulse with energy.
“Hi,” she said in a fruity, melodic voice. “Wow, you’re tall,” she laughed a little and looked up at me, studying my face. “Um, m name is Rivia Darby.” She said the name like it was supposed to ring a bell but it didn’t.
“Nice to meet you, Rivia,” I said waiting to hear what she wanted to say. It definitely wasn’t chance that brought her to me. “Can I help you?”
“Is there somewhere we can talk?” She chuckled nervously, looking around.
“I’m sure we can find somewhere to talk but I’d like to know what we’re talking about.” I shoved my hands in my jacket pockets and waited.
Rivia nodded and cleared her throat. I tried not to linger on the way she pursed her full lips but every time she fidgeted, the streetlights glinted against them.
“You’re Terrance Breeze, right?”
“Yeah,” I said cautiously. Maybe this beautiful angel was going to serve me papers. Shit, I wouldn’t even be mad. I’d probably fuck around and ask her on a date after she slapped the envelope in my hand.
“Um, I’m your daughter.” She blinked rapidly, nervously.
Daughter?
Fuck.
