What? Who would do that? Ben must have it wrong, he must have…. I don't know if I can comprehend all the news I've had in the last five minutes. The Midlands have found me. If they get me, my life is over. My body fills with adrenaline, pumping and beating, pushing me to escape the situation. The fear in my eyes matches my heart wanting to escape my body. I want to run as fast as I can, but I want to be here for Angel, too. I can't leave him now. I’m so torn, I don't even know what I want.
“Drew, no one is to know about the mole. Ben wants to see if he can somehow find out from the Midlands. At the moment, we don’t know who we can trust among them. I will be in contact with you. Ben is going to get you a phone with a number that is for emergency only. I will call you.”
Drew looks over at me and Vinny grabs her arms and forces her to face him. “Drew, are you listening?” he shouts, making everyone look over at him.
"Yes. You will protect her, won't you? Keep her safe," Drew begs him. Then she pulls me in for a hug.
“Look after yourself,” I tell her.
“You too,” she pleads.
“Alice, I have medical gear and two guns. Do you have yours?” Vinny asks as his phone starts ringing again. “I’ve got her…told Drew, they don’t know...Drew won’t say anything. We’re leaving. Where are you? ...Okay, we are leaving.” Vinny ends the call and grabs my hand. He starts to walk, but stops when Pike grabs his arm.
“We won’t let anything happen to her. She needs to be here when Angel wakes up,” Pike says.
Vinny pulls his arm out of his grip.
"My job, before you guys came in her life, was to protect her from them. They are here, and we are outnumbered. They have too many men with them. Do you really want another body in surgery? Because that is what will happen," Vinny practically shouts at him.
His angry tone makes me look at Pike, whose gaze hasn't left me.
Vinny is right. Elijah is dead. Angel is in surgery. Both Pike and Warren are hurt. More blood will be spilt tonight, but it won't be because of me.
“We can’t let her go. Elijah is dead. If Alice is gone too—”
"I don't care,” Vinny growls. “If they take Alice, fuck knows what they will do to her. If we stay, they will win. If I take her, she will survive, and Angel will understand. The only person I care about protecting is Alice." Vinny takes my hand again, and we start walking away.
“How many guns do you have?” Robert shouts and Vinny stops.
“Four, but Ben has a bag hidden for me with a few more,” Vinny says.
Robert walks over to us and looks at me. "To get to the bag, you might need more." He hands Vinny both his guns, then turns to me. Without saying a word, he turns to walk away.
“Robert,” I begin.
He turns to face me.
“Tell him I love him more than he knows.”
Robert nods. “He already knows,” he tells me, and I just stand there for a moment, trying not to break down.
"Alice…"
I turn to see Ben running over to us.
"Get the fuck out of here!” he commands. “They have the hospital surrounded."
I hug him tightly as soon as he’s close enough.
Pulling out of the hug, he hands Vinny a bag. "I've put money in there, guns, and two burner phones. You won't get far. They have too many men. Just get in the fucking car and drive."
I'm terrified that they are so close. Anything can happen.
“We can fight. Angel…”
"I told Angel that if I had to shoot one of his men to keep Alice safe, I would. The fucking Midlands have come with over forty men. They know the Frost family has fallen. The fucking king of London has fallen. Your family is weak right now." Ben turns back to me. “If anything happens to Vinny, you fucking run. Now go!” he shouts before running back in the direction he came from.
Vinny grabs my hand and stalks towards the exit.
I feel a drop on my cheek. As it runs down my cheek, everything feels as if the road has come to an end for me. Now I’m forced to run from them, to run far from Angel. I leave with a broken heart. I leave the man I love, the man who loves me, but what other choice do I have? To save myself, I have to leave, and just pray that Angel will understand.
