  Chapter 1

'Do you believe in Christmas miracles? No? neither did I... However right now, I'm thinking of positives, and I never imagined my life would ever turn this way; looking around at the lights in the trees, this was not how I expected nor imagine my winter holiday to be like...' Our story begins in San Francisco a few weeks ago, Eira was just finishing off her work in the office when her phone pinged, and she saw it was the Uber driver; Eira logged off and grabbed her jacket before wishing her colleagues 'Merry Christmas'. The Uber took her home as she packed up her luggage before heading to the airport. However, as she paid the fare the driver says, "looks like this year it's going to be a very snowy and cold winter". Eira says, "thanks for driving me here". The Uber leaves as Eira heads inside the airport to see it is filled with people on the phone and heading out frustrated; Eira comes over to the counter where the board has a huge red sticker over it with the word, 'CANCELLED'. Eira asks a stewardess, "good afternoon, what is going on?". The guy named Rick replies, "I'm very sorry Miss, there will be no flights out today". Eira shows her ticket for the flight to Vancouver however Rick doesn't accept it. For a moment Eira looks at Rick before asking, "hold on a second, what do you mean there are no flights out today? what about Toronto?". Rick says, "I'm afraid not, Miss". Eira looks at her phone for a moment before asking, "ok, which flights are still available? Any flights is good as long as they get me to Vancouver?". Rick says, "I don't think you understood what I said Miss, there will be no flight out today due to a huge snowstorm". Eira rolls her eyes while Rick asks sarcastically, "don't you pay attention or listen to the news?".

Eira looks outside and tries to act smart replying, "for a little bit of snow? aren't the airlines exaggerating? When did all the pilots become weather reporters?". Rick says, "look, Miss, I simply follow orders from my managers". Eira apologizes before asking, "ok, can I not have another flight in the next few days?". Rick answers, "as I have said, Miss, there will not be flights out today or the next few days until the storm is over". Eira pleads however Rick sympathizes saying, "I'm really sorry". She sighs before taking her luggage and sitting on the bench wondering, 'what am I going to do now?'. Eira looks at her phone and dials her mom's Beatrice number. After a few minutes, Beatrice answers, "Eira, is that you sweetie?". Eira asks, "mom, did you press the loudspeaker button?". Beatrice checks her phone before apologizing as she looks at the time asking, "Eira, aren't you supposed to be flying now? where are you now?". Eira takes a deep breath before answering, "mom, I have some bad news, I won't be able to make it home for Christmas, you see there's an unexpectedly heavy snowstorm going to hit the city and they have cancelled all the flights". Beatrice says, "no, that means you won't be able to come home at all for the holidays?".

Eira gets a little emotional and begins to cry as she asks, "mom, why do you have to be so far away?". Beatrice says, "I will let your dad know and Stephanie know". Eira says, "I really wish I could be with you mom, dad and Stephanie". Beatrice sympathizes with Eira before asking, "what's your plan now, sweetie?". Eira replies, "I am going to head back to my apartment and wait until the snowstorm vanishes". Just then a man's voice comes over asking, "Is that my little Eira on the phone?". Beatrice hands the phone to her husband Matthew who says, "how are you, snowy? I hope you are coming soon for the holidays". Eira replies, "sorry pops, the weather is bad, and I can't come". Beatrice suggests, "I have a great idea how about for Christmas we do a video call?". Eira says, "ok mom, take care and speak soon". After ending the call, Eira sighed before looking at the news on the TV speaking of the incoming blizzard. Eira says, "damn this crazy global warming". Eira grabs her bag and heads back to her apartment to see her door opened; she sees Jade half-naked and making out with a guy shouting, "Jade what the hell! who gave you permission for this?". Jade stops kissing the guy and turns to Eira saying, "spoilsport!". The guy says, "Eira, you should maybe find someone to love!". Eira rolls her eyes before turning and giving time for her friend and lover to change. Aaron gives her one last kiss before saying, "babe, give me a call when you reach your parent's home, love you". Aaron leaves as Eira turns back to Jade saying, "look you're my bestie but please take it to your bedroom next time". Jade says, "don't worry about it, what are you doing back here? I thought you were supposed to be flying out".

Eira sighs before answering, "haven't you heard the weather forecast or seen the news? there's an incoming snowstorm and blizzard about to hit the city, flights have been cancelled and this means I am unable to fly home for the holidays". Eira begins to cry just as Jade comes over and says, "I'm sorry bestie, why don't I prepare you a delicious warm hot chocolate with extra marshmallow to cheer you up?". Eira smiles before sitting on the couch just as Jade heads to the kitchen and prepares it; Eira soon spots something in Jade's room and heads in to take a look. She comes in and sees a suitcase packed along with a bag handbag. Jade says, "Eira, here you go sweetie". Eira looks at Jade asking, "what's with the suitcase? are you going somewhere?".

  Chapter 2

Jade puts the hot chocolate on the table before replying, "yeah, actually I am getting ready to drive over to my parent's house before the snowstorm gets worse!". Eira sighs sadly just as Jade says, "I am not leaving without you, bestie". Eira was surprised by Jade's words asking, "what, how can I come with you, especially on such short notice?". Jade replies, "your suitcase is packed, and I don't want you to spend the holidays alone". Jade heads out for a second to make a quick call before coming back in saying, "my mom is excited about your arrival, she always cooks so much food!". Eira giggles while Jade says, "you know Colden won't be spending the holiday with us due to his career". Jade heads out for a minute just as Eira sighs thinking, 'Colden McCallister, a professional basketball player who plays for the NBA... we were never close....'. Eira heads to her room for a moment taking out a photo album before her memory goes into flashback, 'every child has a different experience in school, some good and some bad... I didn't mind being the invisible girl with few friends like Jade; I loved books'. Young Eira is reading a book in the corridor when someone throws a basketball at her causing her to drop her glasses, and books and fall down. One of the guys says, "oi bookworm, maybe you should watch where you are going!". The other guy teases her too calling her a 'geek', as she got up she noticed Colden looking at her however she ran away thinking, 'although Colden was Jade's brother... he was similarly a jerk for just watching and not doing anything. (end of flashback).

Eira sighs before Jade knocks on the door asking, "are you ready, bestie?". Eira smiles and replies, "yep, let's go". Jade brings down the two suitcases just as Eira gets a call from Stephanie who says, "hey Eira, mom, and told me the news, I can't believe you won't be here for the holidays". Eira says, "yeah but guess what Jade asked me to spend the holidays with her". Stephanie says, "I'm glad sis, you won't spend it alone". Stephanie says, "hopefully we will do a video call for Christmas". Eira smiles and says, "for sure". Stephanie mentions Colden however Eira says, "Jade has told me he's not going to be home...". Stephanie says, "aww, what a shame!". Eira says, "honestly I'm glad that Colden is not going to be there". Stephanie teases Eira just as a voice calls out, "mummy, can you open this juice for me please?". Stephanie says, "sis, I have to go, Lydia is calling me". Eira says, "give Lydia a big kiss from her Auntie Eira". Stephanie soon ends the call just as Eira comes down and sits in the car with Jade before driving off. Jade drove to Oakland which was her hometown as Eira also had memories of living there when she was younger. Eira puts the radio on to hear some Christmas songs whilst Jade also sings along however soon the weather begins to worsen as Jade says, "bestie, I need to focus on driving so no more singing".

Eira sees the road is covered in snow as Jade asks for some advice about telling her family about Aaron. Eira is supportive saying, "I'm sure your parents will accept and be happy for you", Jade says, "thanks bestie, you're the best". After a short drive, Jade reaches her home and opens the door as Eira carries the luggage; Jade looks around before calling out, "hello? mom? dad? is anyone home?". Just then a black and white cat comes down as Jade bends down saying, "aww, I missed you too girl". Cherie asks, "Jade, is that you?". Jade replies, "yep, it's me, mom". Cherie comes out and hugs Jade before welcoming Eira too. Eira says, "thank you so much for having me spend the holiday with you, Mrs. McCallister". Cherie says, "please sweetie, call me Cherie and you are most welcome". Eira nods before mentioning her vegetarianism however Cherie is unders

tanding and assures her that the food is cruelty-free. Eira says, "thank you once again, Cherie". Jade says, "come on bestie, let me show you your room". They head upstairs as Jade opens the door to the guest room which is cosy and simple in design. Jade asks, "do you need a hand to unpack?". Eira replies, "I'll be fine, Jade". Jade leaves while Eira unpacks her clothes and puts them in the wardrobe before opening the window briefly and taking her book sitting by the windowsill. She begins to read for a few minutes however there is a knock on the door as jade says, "come on bestie, it's time for dinner".

Eira enjoyed the vegetarian lasagne and was excited to know what Cherie would be making for Christmas. Soon after dinner, Eira feels very tired, heads for a shower before changing into her nightie, and lays on the bed. her phone begins to ring and she sees it is her mom's call. Beatrice asks, "sweetie, I'm calling to check up on you. is everything OK?". Eira replies, "I'm fine mom, just at Jade's place for the holidays". Beatrice asks, "I hope Cherie gave you a warm welcome?". Eira says, "yes mom, she did". Eira yawns as Beatrice can sense Eira is tired and wishes her goodnight before ending the call. Eira turns her phone to vibrate and soon falls asleep. Later at 2AM, Eira awakes feeling parched, and heads to the kitchen quietly to grab a glass of water when she suddenly hears noises in the dark; Eira turns back wondering, 'what's going on? who's there?'. Eira grabs her glass of water to leave however sees a dark shadow. She comes to the front door and grabs an umbrella saying, "whoever you are.. show yourself...". A familiar voice says, "put the umbrella down, you look crazy". Eira turns on the light before seeing who it is as her facial expression turns to anger asking, "what are you doing here?".

  Chapter 3

Eira still looking at the person holding the umbrella says, "you? you frightened me to death lurking in the shadows? what are you doing here anyway?". Colden comes closer and takes the umbrella from her hand saying, "it's great to see you too, Eira". Eira looked at Colden noticing his style thinking, 'damn he looks even sexier...' . Colden asks, "are you done checking me out, snowflake?". She coughs before rolling her eyes replying, "whatever, I can see that you're still the same arrogant cocky jerk". He winks playfully at her and teases her before saying, "this is my parent's house, I should ask you what you are doing here?". Eira tells him, "well you see due to the snowstorm, my flight to Canada was cancelled, Jade offered me to a chance to spend it with the family for Christmas." Colden says, "mmmm...I see". Eira says, "what about you? Jade told me you were going to be abroad for an important game". Colden ignores the question saying, "look it's late and you should get back to bed and sleep". He heads upstairs leaving Eira feeling puzzled and weird. She heads back to grab her glass of water going back upstairs to sleep; the next morning, Eira woke up and looked at her calendar thinking, 'I can't believe today is Christmas eve and I'm spending it by myself.' Eira got up as she headed for a quick shower thinking of all the traditions she did with her family; Eira finally changed before heading downstairs to the smell of something delicious. Eira looked around to see Jade was enjoying the hot spicy omelette with hash brown; Jade says, "Eira, it's good you have woken up! come and eat!". Eira says, "good morning to you too Jade! there's something I need to talk to you about". Jade looked at Eira who mentioned last night, and Colden as Jade got up and headed straight upstairs; Colden had just finished getting change when his door opened to Jade running to hug him. Eira headed upstairs to see Jade and Colden sharing a hug; Jade says, "I can't believe you never told me you were coming back, bro?". Colden laughs answering, "I missed you too sis, it was all last-minute". Colden's stomach growls as Eira laughs while Cherie says, "KIDS COME EAT!".

Jade asked, "bro, didn't you have an important match to play this season?". Colden brushes it off and sees Eira wishing saying, "good morning, snowflake! I hoped you slept well". Eira sensed that Colden was being sarcastic and rolled her eyes before heading downstairs. After eating, Jade heads for a shower while Cherie heads into the garden to make a call. Colden sees a tray of breakfast as he opens the door asking, "mom, who's the tray of food for?". Cherie replies, "take to your father... he insists to work on Christmas eve". Eira looks around asking, "Cherie where are the Christmas decorations and tree?". Cherie replies, "oh dear, you're right sweetie... with my husband Kevin being a crazy workaholic... he didn't get time to buy it... and the snowy weather isn't helping to go out either". Eira says sadly, "what do you mean no Christmas tree and lights? it's not the same without the festive tree and lights". She sighs just as Colden grabs a cupcake; Eira asks, "hey, are you allowed to eat a cupcake given you're a professional basketball player, and wouldn't it affect your diet and metabolism?". Colden's eyes widen with anger, and he coldly replies, "It's none of your damn business, Eira!". Eira is shocked by his tone and says, "you need to take a chill pill! I'm taking my hot chocolate and breakfast where no one will bark at me!". A little while later, Eira is sitting by the window still reading the book, 'Immortal Desires' just as the door opens with Colden entering saying, "I had a feeling you would be reading, snowflake". Eira stops reading for a moment before looking at Colden saying, "it's rude to enter a ladies’ room without knocking! and I hate being interrupted when I'm reading Colden". Colden asks, "woah, when did you become a strong-willed kitty? I prefer the friendly and cute version of you". Eira was surprised but blushed hearing Colden call her 'friendly and cute'. Colden says, "I came in to tell you that the snow has calmed down for now... the roads are looking much clearer to travel". Eira says, "cool, is that all? can I get back to my book now?". Colden asks nervously, "actually, u-um... would you like to come with me and choose a Christmas tree? I know it's something that should have been done today but it's never too late right?". Eira sighs get up and say, "ok, I will grab my jacket and meet you downstairs". After ten minutes, Eira comes outside to see Colden waiting for her on his motorbike. Eira asks, "can't we just take the car?".

Colden hands her a helmet replying, "come on snowflake, don't be a scaredy-cat... I'll protect you!". Eira puts on the helmet, and they soon drove off; they reach a tree farm where Eira looked around asking, "Colden, why have you brought me here?". Colden replies, "I saw how much Christmas trees meant to you earlier... you looked sad". Eira explains about what the tree means to her before Colden finds a huge tree however Eira laughs saying, "that's not the right tree... it's a palm tree". Eira looks around before saying, "all these trees look so small". The owner Alex was not happy and said, "how dare you insult my trees? they are the finest trees ever!". Colden eventually calms him down before Eira finds a huge tree at the back; Colden pays Alex before asking him, "can you please deliver the tree to the house?". Alex nods and they soon drive off to do some shopping for Christmas lights, decorations, and food. as Eira watched Colden she couldn't help but wonder, 'why is Colden acting nice all of a sudden?'. Colden notices Eira in deep thoughts asking, "what's the matter, snowflake? you seem lost and sad". Eira sighs and replies, "I just wish I was spending the holidays with my family".

  Chapter 4

Colden says, "that's understandable". Eira looks at Colden asking, "Colden, why are you being so kind to me?". Colden asks, "what do you mean, I'm always kind?". Eira replies, "no you aren't...". Colden asks, "what do you mean by that? you make me sound like a villain". Eira rolls her eyes replying, "never mind, what's it like being a professional basketball player like Kobe?". Colden replies, "Kobe is my legend and it's a passion to play... but I would like to hear about you?". Eira was surprised asking, "what do you mean by me? what do you want to know?". Colden says, "can you tell me about your Christmas traditions, snowflake?". Eira looks around saying, "ok, buy me a cup of eggnog and I'll tell you". Colden brings her to a nearby cafe and orders her an eggnog and a Christmas gingerbread. Eira drinks it and says, "well for Christmas we have turkey, brussels sprouts, potatoes, dumplings, and gravy... all the food is deliciously prepared by my mom... but since I became a vegetarian when I was thirteen, I only enjoy vegetables and salad more. family meals are special together and then opening the presents... gathering around the Christmas tree, drinking eggnog, and watching Christmas movies... it's a forever feeling". Colden smiles hearing Eira's family traditions asking, "how did you become a vegetarian if everyone in your family eats meat?". Eira replies, "it was my own choice, I didn't want to eat animals anymore". Colden finishes his latte saying, "your tradition sounds amazing". Eira says, "I just hate breaking it". Colden places his hand on hers saying, "hey don't worry I'm sure everything will be ok, just know that I'm here if you need to talk or let things off your chest".
