ALPHA’S OBEDIENCE
He’s determined to bring two enemies back together…but his own heart gets in the way.
When pregnant omega Sivney is asked to take care of a wounded alpha named Naran, he agrees. Naran is combatant, bitter, and determined to keep everyone at a distance, but especially Lev, the fellow alpha he betrayed in the worst way. Not that that’s hard, since he’s confined to his room after injuries to both his legs.
Sivney thinks that’s BS. It’s easy to see Naran and Lev belong together, even though relationships between two alphas are uncommon. But Lev needs something only Naran can give him, so Sivney is determined to bring them back together.
It works, until his own feelings get in the way…
And outside the PTP ranch, things get worse and worse...
How will the pack survive?

Lev Howell would never admit it to another alpha, but the head of security of the PTP ranch scared him a bit. Bray Whitefield was about as big as alphas came, with bulging muscles under his tight black shirt—though pack alpha Lidon was even bigger—and he wasn't the cuddly, warm vibes type either. Then again, the man had little reason to be cordial toward Lev.
"I'm still not convinced we can trust you," Bray said, confirming Lev's suspicions the man hadn't warmed up to him. "Your employment history doesn't give me a lot of confidence in your ability to make smart decisions. Working for a man like Bennett Wyndham is one thing, but continuing in his employment when you saw what he was capable of, that speaks volumes about your character."
There was little Lev could say other than the truth. "I know it seems that way. And I've told Palani how much I regret my choices, but I'm more than willing to explain them to you as well. If you want me to, that is.”
Stop talking now, he told himself. He had a tendency to let his mouth run and say the most stupid shit when he was nervous. Now would not be a good time for that.
Bray cocked his head as he studied Lev, his brown eyes seeming to pierce through every defense he had. "You've been here over a month now. I've never heard you talk about your family or seen you even attempt to connect with them. I take it you're not close?"
Oh god. The man knew how to ask the difficult questions, didn't he? Lev let o ut a sigh. He'd known this was coming at some point, but he'd hoped to at least be able to prove his worth before he had to explain how embedded he and his family had been in the late "Big Bennett" Wyndham's organization.
"No, we’re not close. You could say I'm the black sheep of the family. Or the biggest disappointment, whichever you prefer."
He was unable to keep the hurt out of his voice, but maybe that was for the better. Maybe if Bray sensed the depth of his emotions about his family, he would understand this was not a topic Lev liked to talk about—and that was the understatement of the year.
Bray's eyes softened a little, reminding Lev of the way the man looked whenever he spotted his two mates or when he held his son. There was an incredible difference between the professional, stern Bray and the Bray he was with his family. Maybe one day, he’d be deemed worthy of that second look, but for now, cold and stern it was.
"It can't have been easy for you, being the youngest with two alpha brothers above you," Bray said. Lev's eyes widened before he could conceal his reaction, and Bray let out a short laugh. "You've been here all this time. Did you really think we didn't do a background check? Trust me, there's not a whole lot I don't know about you."
Lev closed his eyes, his cheeks growing hot. How much had Bray found out? Did he know about…? Of course he knew about Watkins. The man was staying here, for fuck's sake. No doubt the PI had bragged about how he'd been able to play Lev and get the information he needed from him.
Being foolish enough to believe someone had cared for him without an ulterior motive was cause for embarrassment all by itself. But Lev submitting to him made it ten times worse. There was no greater disgrace for an alpha than to allow yourself to be dominated by someone else, and that was exactly what Lev had done. Voluntarily.
But never again. He would never again be that stupid. That naïve. God, he'd been such a fool to believe that Watkins—and no, he flat out refused to call the man by his first name anymore—had liked him. He’d had such dreams about his future with him, such high hopes. It had all been a lie.
“I’d prefer not to talk about my family," he said, trying to sound as determined as he could in the presence of such an imposing alpha. It was the one thing his father and brothers had kept criticizing him for, how hard a time he had asserting himself as an alpha. Not only in their presence, but in general. His father had repeatedly called him the weakest alpha he ever met—and that was about the worst insult you could give an alpha.
“That may be so, but that doesn't matter to me."
"Palani said I should talk to you. Doesn't that mean he thinks I'm okay?" It didn't come out quite as self-confident as he had intended, his voice too insecure. Story of his life. Easily intimidated, that was his constant curse.
"It does, but that doesn't mean I'm convinced yet."
"But doesn't he outrank you as the second-in-command of the pack?"
Now there was a sentence he never thought he'd utter. It was still hard to believe that the people on the PTP ranch formed a pack. Those hadn't been around for many decades. And even more, multiple pack members were able to shift. In school, Lev had learned about the wolf shifters of old. But those stories had sounded like legends, almost like folklore, not something that had happened in real life.
Or that could ever occur again, and yet here they were. If he hadn't seen it with his own eyes, he would've never believed that decades after the last recorded shift—and that had been an anomaly in itself—people were able to shift again. God, how he wanted that too. But the chances of that happening were practically nil.
According to the pack's research, you needed mates to be able to shift. And not just a mate, but two mates, as all the relationships on the ranch were threesomes, with the exception of the pack alpha who had three mates. And they had to be fated mates too, a concept that was equally mysterious and drenched in old tales as shifting itself. Of course, that made Lev's chances slim because who would ever be mated to a malfunctioning, broken alpha like him? He was dead sure by now fate had given up on him and intended for him to stay single the rest of his life.
Bray's eyes narrowed. "That's a challenging comment to make for someone in your position."
Oops. He hadn't intended to piss the alpha off, but apparently, he had succeeded anyway. Why could he never get it right, even when he tried so hard? "I meant no offense," he said quickly.
Much to his surprise, Bray chuckled. "In my experience, that's what people say when they just offended someone."
The man wasn’t wrong, and Lev's shoulders dropped. He had fucked up again, hadn't he? No matter what he did, he always managed to make people angry or frustrated with him. The only one who had ever had patience with him had been…
Nope. Not going there.
"Still, you do have a point," Bray said, much to Lev's surprise. "A green light from Palani is a high recommendation. Plus, Lidon confirmed you're part of the pack, so we’re going to have to put you to work anyway. It might as well be where I can keep a close eye on you."
Lev couldn't believe what he was hearing. It wasn't lofty praise, but it sounded like Bray at least wanted to give him a chance. "So I'll be on your team?"
Bray gave him a curt nod. "Yeah. We’re short on security guards, so we can definitely use you. You'll be on perimeter duty today. But keep in mind that I'm watching you. If you so much as look in the wrong direction, I will boot you out myself in a highly unpleasant fashion, you understand me?"
Lev nodded, unable to keep a smile off his face. Finally he was afforded a chance to prove he was serious about staying here, about being a valuable pack member. And he'd be outside again after being mostly confined to his alpha house for the last month. Granted, that was also because he’d been unsure if he was even truly welcome on the ranch and in the pack, but still. He'd missed it, the blue skies, the fresh air.
"Thank you, alpha, for giving me a chance. I promise you won't regret it."
Bray gave him another piercing look, and Lev felt exposed to his very soul. "You don't call me or any of the other alphas on the ranch alpha. The only one who deserves that title is Lidon. You’ll call me Bray, like everyone else."
"Yes, alpha. I mean, Bray," Lev said, and he wanted to smack himself for being so stupid.
"Let's get this show on the road," Bray said.
Half an hour later, Lev was walking the perimeter, following Bray's instructions. He was dressed the same way as the other guards in a black T-shirt and a pair of black cargo pants with sturdy boots. And it felt familiar, much like what he'd been wearing when he'd been working for Big Bennett, but he pushed that thought away quickly. There was no sense in dwelling on the past or the numerous mistakes he’d made. He had a future now here, and he needed to embrace that.
He was also fully armed, and that showed a level of trust despite Bray's reservations that had surprised Lev. Bray must have picked up on that because he'd said, "No matter how I feel about you, I would never let you do your job unprepared. I take the security of this pack very seriously, and I expect you to do the same. No sleeping on the job here…"
