Foreword
Thanks for coming back for the final installment of Dashing Devil’s story. Nine books ago, I set out to tell a story about a man who didn’t know how to live, only to fulfil his perceived purpose.
This is where that story ends.
You may notice this final installment runs a bit longer than the others. That wasn’t by accident. Bringing Boyd’s journey to a close, one that felt earned for him and his Devoted, took a little more room than usual.
It also took a little more time.
I appreciate your patience in getting here. I didn’t want to rush the ending of a story that’s meant so much to me, and I hope, to you as well.
Thank you for sticking with Boyd, his Devoted, and this world all the way to the end.
Now, let’s finish it.
Thanks for reading,
G.D. Brooks

Prologue
Violet floated up on purple vortexes of energy that spiraled up her forearms to get a look at her reflection in the glass of the framed poster she waited in front of. She wore a pair of black leather shorts and a cropped T-shirt that scrawled ‘FUCK THE AUTHORITY’ across her chest in bold crimson letters. It was almost ironic, given that the framed poster on the wall she checked her reflection out in was of a nonPowered officer of the Authority telling people they should ‘Do your part!’.
Violet wore the t-shirt and leather shorts over a fishnet body suit. She’d accessorized her look with knee-high lace-up platform shit-kickers, a pair of fingerless gloves, and a studded leather choker. She’d thought about wearing the one with the ring for a leash to connect to in order to send the message that she was ready to be a good girl.
She didn’t want to be too overt, so Violet kept that one in her bag—for now. Her Devil seemed the kind who’d want to put that one on her himself… after he was done making her be a good girl.
“Blrpbt!” Violet blew out a raspberry as she rapidly shook her head back and forth, banishing that train of thought before it got her started. “No, Vie-Vie,” she muttered to herself. “that’s bad. No toxic thoughts today. Everything has to be perfect.”
Refocused on making sure everything was perfect, she checked out her reflection’s hair and makeup. Her mid-back length midnight black hair was down and deliberately messy. She’d darkened her eyelids and lined her bright green eyes in a thick, bold black to make sure they popped and painted her lips a deep crimson that darkened towards the edges.
Violet had asked Lilith if she should change her style, but her Devil’s mother had assured her that he liked her look. The demoness had suggested she lean into it, instead.
“Um… are you okay?” a very nervous man called out from the group of skittish suits she’d been told to wait with.
His comment was likely brought on by her muttering to herself. Or maybe it was the vortexes of purple fire that were keeping her aloft so she could get a proper look at her reflection in the framed poster.
“Of course I’m okay!” Violet cast the man a wide grin as she dismissed her Power and dropped back to the floor. “I’m more than okay. I’m perfect! Everything is perfect because today is the day that my Devil finally summoned me. So it has to be perfect!”
She tilted her head to one side, blinking a few times. “No need to ask if I’m okay, because I’m perfect, right?”
The young-ish man’s eyes went wide, and he patted the air between them in a motion Violet had seen most often used with wild animals the one making the gesture expected to pounce at any moment. He stammered, “P-perfect… o-of course you’re p-perfect.”
“Thank you,” Violet replied sweetly with a closed lip smile.
Him calling her perfect like that got dangerously close to flirting. And since this boring-looking guy wasn’t her Devil, she would have to get mad if he flirted with her. But she had literally solicited his response, so she decided she shouldn’t get mad. It wasn’t like he’d said it with a flirty tone.
He was all scared like.
She studied the plain-looking man for something to compliment in return, hoping to trade niceness for niceness like she’d been taught. The problem was that he was a suit. And she couldn’t even compliment said suit, because it was turd brown. It seemed like he’d tried to match his budget suit to his budget haircut. His eyes were on the lighter side of brown, which was something, but the bags under them nullified the one positive trait she could find.
“You’re… diligent?” It was the best she could come up with. “But I recognize you from somewhere. Who are you again?”
The man puffed up a bit, his scrawny chest pushing out his off-the-rack suit. “After a recent promotion, I’m Sub-Director Ellis out of Glorith City. I’ve appeared in many broadcasts…”
“Right! You handled some press releases about my Devil. That’s probably where I know you from.” Violet brightened right up. “You look taller now that I see you standing in this group instead of next to him.”
“Uh, thanks?” Ellis replied. He swallowed before adding, “But we’ve also met previously. A few times. The first was when I processed your arrest paperwork, but we spent just over two hours together yesterday handling the various forms to get you a Glorith ID.”
“Right! You’re that guy! Sorry, I’m normally better with faces, but…” She was about to say that his face was really boring, but she caught herself. This guy knew her Devil, so she shouldn’t be mean to him. “But it’s been such an exciting three weeks leading up to today, and yesterday’s forms were so monotonous and repetitive, I sort of daydreamed my way through them.”
It was the truth. Violet had spent a good chunk of the boring parts of yesterday thinking about the exciting parts of the few weeks it had been since she’d last seen her Devil. After helping him kick the ass of some angelic types and getting to spend a spa night with Silvie and his other women, she’d been allowed to spend just a little time with her Devil himself the next day in Eden.
She had been on her best behavior, and he had been so much kinder and warmer than she deserved. She’d thought it had been too good to be true, so hadn’t fought it when she was sent back to Lethe’s Garden of Healing. Well, she hadn’t fought… much.
Lilith being there took what little fight she’d let boil through her newfound control of her emotions right out of her. While the ancient demoness had never shown Violet her fangs, the young woman was well aware of them from the stories the others told where she’d been treated. Calliope and Clio, her therapists, had told Violet about her Devil’s mother.
Violet came to understand the difference between pretending to be scary to exert a sense of control on the world around you and actually being scary because you controlled that world after some conversations with her other therapist, Melpomene, about Lilith. After what those three had told Violet about Lilith, she knew she needed to keep the ancient demoness on her side. She’d ceased her fit-throwing the moment Lilith had looked at her sideways.
She had been invited to her Devil’s home! After two weeks of prep and a week in an apartment with other women Lilith was helping in some way in New Tri-Met to prove to everyone that she was a good girl now, it was finally happening. The girls she’d met in Tri-Met were kind of cool. The fact they didn’t recognize her as Violet Vortex right off the bat helped. But now, the wait was over, and she was off to see her Devil!
“Ahem, Miss Violet?” The plain-looking guy coughed into one hand.
‘No, Vie-Vie, that’s bad! He just told you his name,’ she scolded herself internally.
Sub-Director Ellis coughed again to get her attention, which told her that she’d spaced out on him. It also reminded her why she now remembered spending two hours with him the day before—she’d had to gently correct him for calling her ‘Miss Vortex’.
“Are you feeling alright? You seem a little…” His voice trailed off, unwilling to finish the thought. That he’d said anything was a surprise, given his fearful expression.
Glancing to the dozen or so suits that had started moving further and further away from him as he addressed her, she realized they were all scared of her. She knew what they were afraid of and rolled her eyes.
“I’m not going to freak out and start blowing stuff up or anything, okay? That was so last year. And even when I was blowing stuff up, it’s not like I…” Violet trailed off as memories she tried to forget came back to her. She shook the thoughts and the self-recrimination they brought away before ending more firmly with, “I’m a good girl now. I know how to express myself in healthy ways and everything.”
That didn’t put the boring-looking Ellis or the rest of the suits at ease, so she pressed on.
“Like, yeah, I’m a wee bit jittery right now, but can you blame me? I’ve been invited to Dashing Devil’s home. Of course, I’m excited! In fact, if you’re waiting down here, that means you’ve been invited to his home, too. Why are you not more excited about it? You all seem way too tense.” She scowled.
“Uh… yeah… well… of course I’m excited,” Sub-Director Ellis replied after a couple of false starts. “We’re all excited to be stationed at the Devoted’s base. But uh… it’s, ah…”
“We’re all just nervous about meeting Dashing Devil and the rest of The Devoted in the flesh,” one of the other suits piped up. He stood in the group that had steadily moved away from her, leaving Ellis as a barrier between the ‘unstable element’ they all thought she was and them.
She knew how they labeled her just from their eyes.
“Right, what he said!” Ellis was quick to jump on board with any explanation that didn’t include her making him nervous… make that more nervous.
“Haven’t you met them, like, a whole lot of times?” Violet arched an eyebrow at the boring-looking-Ellis. “Like a lot, a lot?”
“Uh… yes… but I’ve never seen their base… and now I’m going to be stationed there. You wouldn’t think it would make me nervous, but it has me as anxious as a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs. Ha-ha-ha…” The boring-looking-Ellis ended with an awkward laugh as he scratched the back of his head.
“Okay, whatever.” Violet decided it wasn’t worth making him admit that she made him nervous—even if it stung enough to make her pout. She was a good girl now, dammit! She had told him so and everything.
Unfortunately, she knew that people didn’t believe her simply because she said it was so. She had to show them. And one of the ways to show she was a good girl was by at least pretending to find boring people interesting.
“Why are you being stationed at their base?” she asked.
“To support the war effort,” Ellis replied promptly. “Each of us is a Sub-Director from a different city who are being stationed with the Devoted to serve as liaisons for our home cities.”
“So like… ordering your cities’ Heroes around when the fighting starts?” Violet asked with honest curiosity, cocking her head to the right. “I thought the Devil did that these days. Are you going to be like his middle men—sorry, middle people?”
She corrected herself to account for the two boring-looking lady suits in the group.
“Uh… well, yes… Devil does that.” Ellis scratched the back of his head. “And no, there are detailed command networks with many redundancies set up to handle combat scenarios that we won’t be a part of. But liaisons are pretty much middlemen for all the other stuff, so that part is accurate.”
He said the last part with an upbeat tone and a big smile. It was almost as if he feared she might blow him up for telling her she was wrong and hoped her getting part of it right would spare him a messy ending.
A heavy sigh escaped her, and Violet’s shoulders slumped. Showing people she was a good girl wasn’t nearly as easy as she thought it would be.
The nervous glances the suits kept casting her way while trying to hide it made her feel self-conscious. She crossed her arms over her chest and pulled into herself. At least boring-looking-Ellis was trying—doing that thing where he stared at her forehead instead of meeting her gaze, but he wasn’t blinking enough.
“Oh… okay.” Violet hated when her voice started to sound small. “So… uh… what will you be middle-manning, then?” If she could get him to start talking about himself, maybe the others would stop looking at her like that.
Or maybe she should just go back to New Tri-Met. People didn’t look at her like that in New Tri-Met. What if her Devil’s other women looked at her like that?
‘No, Vie-Vie, that’s bad! Just a little longer, then HE will be looking at you again.’
She realized she’d missed the beginning of boring-looking-Ellis’s reply. She started paying attention, because zoning out was the quickest way to get sent back to Lethe. Violet smiled and nodded to let him know she’d zoned back in.
“… And we’ll arrange public awareness campaigns and confirm distribution of emergency safety equipment from our respective cities. All of that is becoming increasingly important, as Devil says Eugene’s next move should be any day now. He said he expected they would likely wait out the usual three to four weeks that the general public remains on high alert, before making his move… and that was three weeks ago.”
Violet blinked. Time flew when you… well, it flew. Had it really been three weeks since that idiot had announced he was going to destroy her Devil?
“On this side,” boring Ellis continued, “we will be tasked with communicating the needs and concerns of our people to the Devoted’s representative—which will primarily be Miss Bailey.” He paused, then frowned. “Although my understanding is a large part of why we are being brought all the way out here is so that we’ll be within range for Mind Witch to hear our thoughts on such things. She’ll probably be the one keeping Devil up to date on what is most vital.”
“Oh, that actually sounds pretty cool.” Violet put as much enthusiasm behind her words as she could, which wasn’t all that much given the suit-inspired downturn in her mood. “Like, you know… it seems like an important job.”
Important for middle-people, at least.
“Yeah, it is pretty—” boring-looking-Ellis started to say something as his chest did that puffing-up thing, but Violet cut him off as a light turned on in the room on the other side of the windows across from the elevator.
“Wait… shut up!”
One of the walls in the big room on the other side of the windows flashed open. There was a metal wall there one second, and a big circular tunnel the next.
“Shit, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to tell you to shut up but—SQUEE!!”
Violet rose up into the air on two small columns of spiraling purple fire as the Astral Osprey settled down in the room beyond the windows.
