Sage growled, flipping back to her feet on instinct. She had no idea what she was doing, but her wolf knew. She whispered to Sage, telling her the best places to bite and tear, where to kick and who was weaker than her.

It was strange to turn her back on the wolf and attack the smallest one she could find. Her wolf knew someone else could take care of the other one, because that’s how packs worked. They worked as a team, knowing each other’s strengths and weaknesses.

She wasn’t the biggest or the strongest, but Sage knew she could be the meanest.

Her sharp teeth found the tendons at the back of an enemy wolf’s leg and ripped with surgical precision. It took seconds to lame them, and then she moved on to the next. Killing wasn’t something she was going to do, not unless it was life or death.

Moonlight made the snow brighter; she knew as a human it would normally look blue but the shades of grey and brown and white were all she knew at the moment. Sage fell deeper and deeper into her wolf’s mind until the blood was relished, and she snarled, turning on another that the twins had cornered.

The three of them ripped the wolf apart but stopped just before taking his life.

A sound sharpened her focus, one that had her panicking, one that had Sage remembering her human thoughts and desires.

Jacob yelped in pain and she spun, looking for him among the chaos.

Bonnie and Amelia were handling a wolf nearly as large as Kai, and Shane had his teeth around another’s neck, shaking it until she heard a snap.

  There he was.

Jacob was pinned down by two wolves, kicking and fighting and snarling to keep them from ripping out his throat.

Alexander slammed into one of them – his wolf was the same size as Kai’s, nearly a horse.

But the other was so close—too close.

Sage ran, dodging bites and lunges from other wolves.

Two more were circling him. She felt so relieved when he managed to get up and twist around, teeth glinting in the night as she watched him sink them into the exposed stomach of the wolf Alexander had pinned.

Those two then turned on the others circling them, and Sage knew then that they could take care of it. They didn’t need her.

Something that felt like hot knives sank into her flank and she yelped in pain, whining instead of screaming like she would as a human. Sage turned around, but another bit down on her leg while she was trying to find the source of the pain.

She went down, surrounded as they tore at her. All she could do was kick and thrash, but she was getting tired. The smell of her blood soaked the snow and the air until it was all Sage was aware of, until she stopped fighting back.

Despite everything she’d said, Sage had known she wasn’t ready for a full-on fight, but she was still glad she’d done this – that she’d gotten to experience being a wolf before it had all ended.

She would never know if her presence had made a difference, but Sage liked to think it had.

A vicious snarl brought the world around her into focus and Sage opened her eyes to see Jacob standing over her, protecting her just as he said he would.

She would never forget the way he snapped at anyone who got too close, or how Bonnie and Amelia came to help, pulling off the others and dragging them to the Alpha for justice…

The moon was high in the sky and shone down on her with a loving caress. Sage heaved a huge sigh and hoped that they’d win this fight, even without her.

Her only regret was that she’d just found this place, these people, this life, and Jacob.

“Please,” Jacob whispered, cradling her to his naked chest. “Fight for me. Don’t give up. Just keep fighting.”

His scent washed away some of the acrid blood smell and Sage whined once. She couldn’t look at the damage or she’d never believe she could heal, not when she had been so human and mortal all her life.

Instead, she closed her eyes and imagined what life could be like if she had a few more days, a few more years. What could this pack become given the time?

“There you go,” Jacob murmured, sounding relieved. “Keep fighting, Sage. You’re so strong. Just keep healing.”

Sounds started to filter in, and she heard the Alpha bark instructions at Shane, Olivia, and Alexander.

They would be bringing the bodies and living wolves back to Cascade. It would be a declaration and a warning.

“If they want all-out war, we’ll give it to them,” Kai said. “But maybe the Alpha will reconsider. If we can avoid more death then I think we’d all be grateful.”

  More death?

  Oh no, who had died?

Sage lurched to her front paws, pain like fire in her sides. She couldn’t speak as a wolf, and she was starting to panic.

“Hey, hey!” Jacob yelled, trying to hold onto her. “Be careful! You’re still barely put back together.”

Sage did that thing Jacob did, focusing on her breath. On her exhale she let go of her wolf, remembering what it felt like to walk on two legs, to see in vibrant color, to eat hot dogs…

“Who died?” she demanded the second her bones stopped cracking and she had a mouth that could form words again.

“Oh, thank fuck,” Liam sighed, resting his forehead on her shoulder.

Sage looked around and realized they’d all been surrounding her. All of them laying nearby, pressed close, their bodies touching hers.

“We thought you would, little wolf,” Jacob told her, pulling her close and inspecting as much of her skin as he could.

“You were gone for a few moments,” Noah said, checking her back.

Sage let them touch her, inspect her, make sure her wounds were all closing – faster now that she’d shifted. Bonnie and Amelia hugged her tight, even with Jacob’s arms around her. He wouldn’t let her go.

They’d been worried for her, scared even. Sage hugged Bonnie and Amelia back hard and let them all make sure she was still alive and healing.

  Her family. Her pack.

  Sage

The ground was covered in her blood, stale now and mixed in with the snow, but Sage had bled that much and survived.

She looked up at the trees, wrapping her jacket tightly around her body. Everything was healed, but there were scars to prove that what had happened was real. They were red and angry. Her body still weak and exhausted as it continued to rebuild and repair now that it was no longer just trying to keep her alive.

The sun shone down and made the snow on the trees glitter. An owl hooted.

It was hard to believe it had all happened only the night before.

“I hope you’re not taking a picture of that,” Jacob said, wrinkling his nose as he studied the crusty patch of blood.

What freaked Sage out the most was that it wasn’t the only patch. There were many others – proof a battle had raged here.

She crouched down and angled her camera, getting the dips and valleys and mounds on the ground, the shadows stark, the blood still red…Sage snapped the picture and nodded once.

It wasn’t something she thought would win any awards, but it was a part of her new life she didn’t want to forget. They’d fought for what was theirs, for what they loved.

Sage smiled at Jacob, admiring the sharp line of his jaw and the way his dark hair always looked good even when it was messy. He was frowning at the ground, every sharp edge he had in profile.

Another click as she took his picture.

He looked at her in surprise.

Shrugging one shoulder, Sage stood. “I wanted to remember that there’s this part of you that will always be there - the warrior willing to do anything to keep his family safe. A part I cherish just as much as your softer side.”

Jacob grabbed her coat and tugged her forward. “I’m not the only warrior.” He kissed one cheek and then the other. “I’m so proud of you.”

Warmth flooded her body and Sage leaned into Jacob. “Do you really think Kai’s plan will work?”

“The Cascade Alpha is smart. I really don’t think he gave Sam the go ahead to cross territory lines, at least not yet or he would have had more backup. Hopefully this warning will make him rethink his plans. We’re not as weak as he thought we were.”

Sage nodded, wondering how that would go. Would Olivia and Alexander just drop the bodies off on his front door? She didn’t know very much about the politics of shifters, or anything else in the paranormal world.

But thankfully that wasn’t her job.

“So, now what?” she asked, leaning into him, enjoying the brisk cold. “We go about our lives?”

“Well, I was actually going to ask you something,” Jacob said with a chuckle, hands gripping her coat as he stared down at her. “I want you to move in with me, at the main house, or mine. I don’t care which, but I don’t want you going back to that empty place alone. How do you feel about that?”

“You could always come live with me instead,” she teased. “The drive to the grill is a lot shorter from my apartment.”

Jacob leaned down and gave her a soft, sweet kiss that had her knees weak and her toes curling. “If that’s really what you want then we can do that, but I have to drive into town every day for work anyway. It would take two seconds to drop you off. I’ll even make you coffee every morning.”

Wrapping her arms around his neck Sage couldn’t help but laugh. “You sure make it hard to pass up.”

Sage had no intention of turning down his offer, but it was fun to tease and play. Living with Jacob? Her entire body tingled at the idea of it. He was everything she wanted, and Sage had no intention of giving him, or this life, up.

“You could always work at the shop with us too,” Jacob told her, taking her hand. He led them both through the trees back to where the ATV was waiting.

Checking the wards and the property lines was no small job.

“What would I do there?” she asked, swinging their entwined hands as she studied the landscape, one hand on her camera that hung around her neck. “I know nothing about cars. I’ve only really been good at waitressing.”

“Whatever you want, little wolf. We could teach you, but it’s just a suggestion. You could manage the grill one day if that’s something you preferred. I’ll put in a good word with the boss.” Jacob winked and Sage laughed.

“Isn’t Kai the boss?” she asked, letting him get onto the ATV before climbing on behind him.

“He, or rather, the pack owns it. Alexander runs the grill for him.” Jacob placed one hand over the two wrapped around his middle. “It doesn’t really matter to me what you do, Sage. Not as long as you’re happy.”

Sage hugged him tight, pressing her face into his back. With her new nose she could smell their mate bond, thick and strong between them. She could smell Jacob’s true scent with that spice from his soap she liked so much.

“As long as I’m with you I’m happy,” she told him.

  And she meant every word.

“So…you’ll move in with me then?”

She kissed his cheek. “Yes, I’ll move in with you. We can figure out the details later. Now drive, wolf boy. I want to see the rest of my new home.”

Jacob grinned and turned the ignition. “Hold tight, little wolf. The ride can get a little bumpy.”

Tightening her grip around his middle, Sage breathed deep and sighed happily. Sure, life could get bumpy and rough. They still had to make real lasting peace with the Cascade pack, but she also knew that it would be easier to endure surrounded by friends and family.

Good thing the pack was both.

Sage watched the trees whip by and was grateful she’d gotten so lucky. She’d found her home, and the love of her life. All it had taken was giving up everything that was familiar to her and taking a chance.

It had definitely been worth it.
