Mystery & Thrillers

Lambert and Hook find there's no one to foot the bill Camellia Park Golf Club had completed its first ten years and its owner, Patrick Nayland, felt it was time to splash out. Determined to give his employees a good time, he booked the entirety of Soutters Restaurant. A riotous evening was had by all. In fact they were making so much noise, the screams from the lavatory could easily have gone unnoticed. Chief Superintendent Lambert usually finds that the more enemies a murder victim has, the harder it is to decide who has more motive than anyone else. This victim was at the opposite, even trickier, end of the spectrum: popular with absolutely everyone. From BooklistPatrick Nayland created the Camellia Park Golf Club out of a barren pasture and has turned it into a highly successful enterprise. To celebrate, he hosts an elegant dinner for his staff and their families. Everyone is in a celebratory mood until the club's catering manager discovers Patrick's dead body. Detectives Lambert and Hook are called to investigate, but even this talented duo is puzzled by the murder of a man who seemed to have no enemies. But as the two detectives dig deeper, they discover that things at Camellia Park were not as rosy as they seemed. Another solid entry in the Lambert and Hook series, with realistic descriptions of the nitty-gritty of police procedural work and enough red herrings to baffle even the most dedicated mystery fan. Another lesser-known English procedural series that could be recommended to fans of Reginald Hill or Martha Grimes. Emily MeltonCopyright © American Library Association. [Inspector Peach 10] - Witch's Sabbath

Mystery & Thrillers

Chief Inspector Percy Peach, Detective Sergeant Lucy Blake and the team, hindered as usual by the direction of Chief Superintendent Thomas Bulstrode Tucker, have one of their most puzzling and compelling mysteries to solve. In an area famous for the Lancashire Witches four centuries earlier, it seems that witchcraft still flourishes. When a body is discovered in a derelict farmhouse, it is partly mummified, a pathetic ruin. Although an identity is quickly established, that is only the first of many problems. No one reported this young woman's disappearance when she went missing four months earlier. Most of those who were closest to her, from her former employer to her newly-acquired boyfriend, had reasons to keep quiet. Her flatmate, a woman of her own age, seems to have been very sure that Annie Clark was never going to return. And it appears she was a member of a modern coven, containing both male and female members... Advertising

Mystery & Thrillers

When a young girl is raped and murdered and her body left in a deserted house, it is not discovered for two days and there are few clues at the scene of the crime to incriminate her killer. When a second murder follows, it becomes obvious that the hunt is for a serial killer, who is almost certain to kill again. Moreover, the way the bodies are laid out seems to indicate not only a warped mind but a wish to taunt the police. In the quiet country town of Oldford, a whole community is struck with terror as it waits for the nocturnal killer to strike again. The police machine throws up several suspects, but the fact that there is no obvious motive for the killings makes the investigation more than usually complex—especially when it is suggested that the murder may come from the ranks of the police themselves.

Mystery & Thrillers

Chief Inspector Peach finds the memories of squatters hard to budge Everyone in Brunton is happy to see the decaying, uninhabitable terraced houses of the old cotton town finally demolished to make way for a new industrial development. Happy, that is, until the clearance reveals a grisly secret. As the bulldozers level the site and the old walls are toppled, a decaying arm appears among the debris, raised aloft to the heavens, as if beseeching justice. The corpse gradually acquires an identity, and it seems that this woman lived out the last months of her life as a squatter in one of the derelict houses. DCI Peach discovers a nun, a concert pianist and other, less savoury, characters who were among the victim's companions at that time. But he finds their memories are not easily stirred about things they would rather forget.Review"'A peach of a procedural, amusing throughout, that keeps you guessing until the very end.'
