The Horror From the Hills (1963)

The Horror From the Hills (1963)

Frank Belknap Long

Science Fiction & Fantasy / Horror

One of the early works of pulp terror, The Horror from the Hills is the legendary first tale of the Cthulhu Mythos. It is drawn from the disturbing nightmares of Belknap Long's friend and colleague, H. P. Lovecraft, the master writer of supernatural fiction of the modern age. A blood-sucking demon from the fourth dimension is mistakenly exhibited in a Manhattan museum and feasts on the blood of its admirers. This influential tale of extraterrestrial terror, a bestseller in the 1930s and 1940s, has been out of print for more than three decades. In a relatively short narrative, Long takes us from the remotest origins of our common culture, to the center of civilized mid-twentieth-century, to the cutting edges of contemporary technology to bring us face to face with horrible bloodsucking malevolence. We are fortunate that Chaugnar Faugn is a creation of fiction, drawn from one dark mind into another's pen.

A strange tale of pluralities of worlds, of a theory based on the hypothesis that, in infinity, everything must happen not once, but many times.-0-A completely strange story of a machine designed to travel time and universes—and of the theory that, in an infinity of worlds, somewhere every event must have its exact duplicate, and its near-duplicate, even a near-duplicate that was luckier, happier, than the original—

The Sky Trap

The Sky Trap

Frank Belknap Long

Science Fiction & Fantasy / Horror

The stratoship lurched suddenly. The deck heaved up under Lawton\'s feet, hurling him against Captain Forrester and spinning both men around so that they seemed to be waltzing together across the ship. The still limp gym slugger slid downward, colliding with a corrugated metal bulkhead and sloshing back and forth like a wet mackerel. "Slashaway," Lawton muttered. "Slashaway, old fellow." Slashaway opened blurred eyes, "Phew!" he muttered. "You sure socked me hard, sir." "You went out like a light," explained Lawton gently. "A minute before the ship lurched." "The ship lurched, sir?" "Something\'s very wrong, Slashaway. The ship isn\'t moving. There are no vibrations and -- Slashaway, are you hurt? Your skull thumped against that bulkhead so hard I was afraid --"

The 7th Ghost Story

The 7th Ghost Story

Frank Belknap Long

Science Fiction & Fantasy / Horror

Welcome to The Seventh Ghost Story MEGAPACK®! Once more we have a wide-ranging assortment of supernatural fiction, with setting across the world — Europe, the Americas, Asia — and across the centuries. You will note that we have a larger than normal number of "Anonymous" stories. No, the authors weren't embarrassed by their contributions. Victorian-era literary magazines and newspapers often ran fiction without crediting the author, or with only vague terms like "A Lady," initials, or humorous pseudonyms (as with the story by "Q.E.D." in this volume). Authors later collected their stories in books, and that's when readers discovered who had actually written what. If a story never got reprinted, its author remained a mystery. Modern scholars are still researching these anonymous stories, but many authors will never be properly identified. This time we include:BEAUTIFUL DREAMER, by R.A. LaffertyFROM THE TOMB, by Guy De MaupassantTHE VENGEANCE OF A TREE,...
